Supervisor Speak
At the July 23rd township meeting, resident Janice Devito, on the behalf of 960 residents, presented signed petitions to Supervisors Anderson, Paul, Kiefer, Bullock and myself. The petition read:
"We the taxpayers citizens of Warrington Township, request that the Warrington Board of Supervisors, who were elected to represent the people of this township, reject the current Metro Development proposal for the Tabas Tract located at the corner of Street Rd. and 611. We also request that the board not grant the zoning changes necessary for its construction."
After reviewing the signatures, I noticed the petitioners were from all five (5) voting districts. Which means not by one "special interest group" from a specfic area of the township. I want to thank everyone who took the time to express their concerns of the zoning change to me. Receiving 960 signatures means 960 voices in a government decision. I take this very seriously.
I was disturbed and disappointed with a remark by Supervisor Wayne Bullock to Ms. DeVito when she presented the 960 signatures to him. He asked, "What is the population of Warrington?" Supervisor Rebecca Kiefer said. "About eighteen thousand five hundred." Supervisor Bullock then asked Ms. DeVito "where are the other seventeen thousand?". I was so embarassed, not just for myself, but also for the concerned residents and Ms. Devito, especially since they had gone to a tremendous effort to try to voice their concerns regarding this issue.
(Editor's Note: Any sitting Supervisor can be removed from office by a petition of 5% of the electorate, roughly equivilent to 500 signatures. See township code section 503 of the 2nd class township code.)
