Stormwater A Major Issue In Warington Township

When all the meetings took place on the Tabas Tract one of my major concerns was stormwater run-off for the people in Neshaminy Valley and the intersection of 611 & Street Road. I had made the suggestion to the developer to consider a system called Porous Pavement, a stormwater run-off management method. Without going into much detail the system looks like standard asphalt paving but the stone is much larger. This enables the water to seep back into the ground. The water doesn't lay on the surface so no black ice will form. Yearly maintenance is needed by a sweeper or vacuum to remove any LARGE amount of dirt on the parking lot to prevent clogging.

Skaters and skateboarders don't like the surface. The surface is a little rough for them. To the best of my knowledge the Porous Payment System is not costly. It seems to scare the engineers because it is a new concept. I have spoken to engineers who say this is the way to go. However it may not work on certain developments because of the porosity of the earth itself. I feel anything that will help the environment and reduce stormwater run-off is worth looking into. The quarries have the ability to make the material at the same cost as standard black top.

A development is being looked at now by the Warrington Planning Commission, Danny Jake Corporation located at Limekiln Pike & County Line Road. I suggested to the board of supervisors this is a prime candidate for the Porous Payment System. The board of supervisors agreed.

January 2002 when I became a supervisor I brought this Porous Pavement System to the attention of the board. Of course our township engineer didn't support me on this system. But since then Becky Keifer attended a Stormwater Managment class and was excited about this Porous Pavement System. Good for her! She did this on her own.

P.S. The board just approved Redstone Development III, allowing its stormwater run-off to flow into wetland detention areas that haven't been built yet. The vote was 3 to 1. Again I stand alone.
